Phthalic anhydride is now widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, electronic, agricultural, coating, fine chemical and other industrial sectors. Phthalic anhydride in China is mainly used in the production of phthalic anhydride plasticizers, consuming about 60% of the total consumption of phthalic anhydride, 25% of dyes and paints, and about 15% of unsaturated resins and other products. Phthalic anhydride is an important organic chemical raw material, mainly used in the production of plastic plasticizers, alkyd resins, dyes, unsaturated resins, and certain pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Phthalic anhydride can be used instead of phthalic acid, mainly reacting with monohydric alcohols to form esters, such as dibutyl phthalate and dioctyl phthalate, which are important plasticizers. Phthalic anhydride condenses with polyols (such as glycerol and pentaerythritol) to produce polyarylate resins, which are used in the paint industry; if condensed with glycol and unsaturated acids, it produces unsaturated polyester resins, which can be used to manufacture insulation paint and glass fiber reinforced plastics. Phthalic anhydride is also a raw material for the synthesis of benzoic acid and terephthalic acid, and is also used in drug synthesis.
