Colorless transparent liquid with a strong aromatic smell.
As one of the common aromatic hydrocarbons, it is oxidized to isophthalic acid by chromic acid. Nitration reaction between m-xylene and fuming nitric acid produces dinitrodimethylbenzene. Sulfonation reaction with sulfuric acid; Alkylation reaction can occur under the catalysis of aluminum trichloride.
