Chemical Packaging Explained: Drums, IBCs, Bags and Tank Containers
August 6, 2026 · Shipping Guide
Packaging Is a Cost Center Most Buyers Ignore
Packaging can represent 5–15% of your landed cost for chemicals — and the wrong choice creates disposal, safety and customs problems. Here is the standard range:
| Format | Typical Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 25 kg paper/plastic bag | Powders, granules | Palletized, shrink-wrapped |
| 25/50/200 kg drum | Liquids, pastes | Steel, HDPE or lined |
| 1000 L IBC | Bulk liquids | Cheapest per liter for bulk |
| Flexitank | Non-DG liquids | 20' container, single-use |
| Iso-tank container | Large DG volumes | For hazardous liquids |
UN-Certified Packaging for Dangerous Goods
If your product is classified as dangerous goods (check the MSDS), packaging must carry the UN mark with the correct performance standard and the packing group. Common mistakes: using non-UN drums, wrong packing group, or missing the required labels. Each error can stop your shipment at the port.
Questions to Ask About Packaging
- Is the packaging UN-certified and does the certificate match the product's packing group?
- Is the net weight standard or custom (e.g., 20 kg bags instead of 25 kg)?
- Are labels bilingual per destination requirements?
- Is palletizing and shrink-wrap included in the price?
Serious suppliers discuss packaging before quoting. At Topfine Chemical, standard packaging (bags, drums, IBCs) is quoted transparently, and custom packaging — from retail-ready small packs to private-label drums — is available on request.
